An entertaining game of rugby ended with Westville on top with a 27-17 win over Jeppe.
The visitors from Johannesburg had already had a successful start to the season with notable victories.
Jeppe started strongly with the first try of the game after a well-weighted kick landed in the hands of their speedy winger. The conversion was missed and the visitors took the lead, 5-0.
Westville responded positively with a score of their own after Mambo Mkhize broke from deep in his half and passed to Abande Mthembu to finish but he was reeled in just short of the line. The ball was recycled quickly and Ockie Barnard fought his way over for the try. Grove Akker converted the try to take Westville into the lead 7-5. Mambo delivered again shortly after with a try of his own, after good continuous attacking pressure from Westville. Once again, Akker converted to extend Westville’s lead to 14-5. Akker was to have another big say with his boot when he landed a massive 45 metre penalty to take Westville ahead to 17-5 before half time.
The second half started with a bang with Jeppe scoring immediately after a great passage of play. The kick was converted. After multiple phases they rounded off a well worked passage for another try. The conversion was missed but the momentum had clearly shifted and Jeppe had the ascendency. Westville fought back and were awarded a long penalty which was successful by Akker, taking Westville ahead to 20-17.
With about 10 minutes of the game remaining, a well worked backline move sent Nkomo under the poles for a converted try. Jeppe were not done with the contest though and for the last 5 minutes, threw everything at Westville. Westville defended for dear life and proved to be impenetrable.
It was an incredibly entertaining day of rugby all round for Westville and Jeppe supporters, but in the end the 1st team took the spoils 27-17 to round off a successful day of sport against their Johannesburg counterparts.
