Hockey Report: Westville vs Jeppe – 14 April 2019
Westville Stretch Unbeaten Run to 10 with Huge Win
The Westville 1st Hockey Team continued their good start to the season with a fantastic win against Johannesburg Giants, Jeppe. They have taken their unbeaten run to 10 games for the season.
The game started at a high tempo with both teams trying to take control in midfield. The first Chukka was largely uneventful with both teams failing to break the deadlock, not for a lack of trying with some poor finishing both teams proving costly. The second Chukka proved to be more exciting just three minutes in with Jeppe winning two Penalty Corners and scoring one of them with a fantastic flick into the top right corner by Ross Breytenbach. Just a minute later the home team levelled up with striker, Mazwi Meyiwa, tapping home from close range to make it 1-1 going into the half time break.
The second half started at a similar tempo with Jeppe in control of the game in the early stages, poor finishing cost the visitors. After a couple failed Penalty Corner attempts, Jeppe finally broke the deadlock with a well taken variation tucked home by, Connor Cottam. Once again, Westville, came back with a goal just four minutes after the deadlock was broken by visitors, Jeppe. The goal was scored by a well improvised deflection by striker, Keagan Maccallum, to make the game 2-2. The final Chukka became tougher for both teams with fatigue evident on both sides. The game became more physical with both sides fighting for control, with a few minutes left Jeppe were awarded a Penalty Corner which was well saved again by Goalkeeper, Zane do Pinheiro, who had an outstanding game. With just a couple minutes left on the clock, Westville, countered through Captain Joshua Davies, who ran most of the length of the field and won a vital Penalty Corner. The resulting corner was well flicked by Luke Allen and put home by Jared Slaney on the rebound to rapturous support from the home crowd. Westville defended for the last minute to win the game 3-2.
