On the morning of 2 November, Westville Boys’ High School (WBHS) hosted the ever competitive Hilton College on Bowdens field.

After 2 weekends of not playing any Cricket due to exams and a rained out match, overcoming an on-form Hilton side was going to be tough.

Home side Captain Luke Schlemmer won the toss and elected to bowl. The toss was a crucial one to win because of all the rain that had fallen over week leading up to the game which had made preparations of the pitch very difficult.

WBHS took early wickets and restricted Hilton’s Batsmen to 57/4 in 20 overs. New batsman J. Eddy, however, steadied the Hilton ship with his 73 not out, having faced 128 balls.  He was involved in 2 of the biggest partnership in their innings of 48 and 42. Hilton were restricted to a  total of 154/5 in their allotted 50 overs.

The Westville bowlers who did the damage in the 1st innings were Cameron Gordon 2/27 and Simon Von Staden 2/10.

Hilton achieved something that no other side has achieved this year, in that they were not be bowled out by WBHS. All other opponents, including the mighty Waterkloof, had both been dismissed with ease.

The 2nd innings began with an early wicket.  Westville batsman Jason Oakes sparred at a ball he could have left alone. Nicholas Pentz came in to bat and put a partnership together with Bruce Kerr of 60. After Kerr’s wicket fell,  Luke Schlemmer and Alex Whitelaw put together a solid partnership of 65 to ensure that Westville pulled off another comfortable win.

Although Westville have become an excellent unit, they would be the first to admit that they can still improve further in certain areas. With College and Kearsney still to play, the Highway lads will not be able to rest on their laurels.

WBHS made 155-5 in 45.1 overs. The top run scorers for Westville were Kerr 38(45) and Whitelaw 41(74). Westville won the match by 5 wickets.
