Hockey for WebsiteWestville were held 1-1 by rivals, Glenwood, on a very hot day at the 3 Schools Astro on Saturday morning.

Both teams began the game with alot of intensity and were both intent on pressing as high up the field as possible. The game became very physical with both teams trying to take control in the midfield areas. With 10 mins gone on the clock Glenwood found themselves a man up with Westville’s Keegan Gibbon given a 2 minute suspension for a poor tackle, they failed to capitalize on their advantage. Both teams were creating good circle entries with some good build up play. Westville were rewarded with two penalty corners but both were well saved by the Glenwood keeper.

Westville’s  pressure finally told. Max Teversham weaved his way past 3 defenders and finished past the keeper from the top of the ‘D’. The game became more stretched as the half wore on with the heat taking its toll on the players, Westville were caught out by a swift attack by Glenwood who levelled matters. Westville ended the first half with a man up with Glenwood being punished with a green card, but again this advantage wasn’t taken and both teams went into the break level at 1-1.

The second half started like the first with both teams coming out of the blocks quickly, Westville created an early chance with some good build up play but the final shot by Keagan Fourie was well saved by the keeper. Both teams were fighting hard to take control of the game with Okuhle Cele, back from injury, becoming more influential for Glenwood. Westville found themselves with 10 men once again after a poor tackle from Westville’s midfield heartbeat, Matthew Davies. As the half wore on both teams started making more mistakes with the heat definitely taking its toll. Both teams benefitted from these mistakes with penalty corners going to both teams, but again poor finishing cost the teams and the scores remained 1-1.

Westville had two late chances to take the game but some poor touches and great goalkeeping scuppered any chance of a victory.

The game ended 1-1, with both teams ruing the missed chances. A great spectacle for KZN hockey going into the end of the season. Westville will face DHS this week and will look to build up from their performance with College looming in a few weeks.
