Sihle Mhlamvu hammered home an awarded penalty for a hand ball in the Glenwood box

Westville’s 1st Soccer team continued their unbeaten run in KZN with an emphatic win over local rivals Glenwood last Saturday on Glenwood’s home turf.

The game started off at a rapid pace as both teams attempted to disrupt the other and prevent their opponent from developing a proper attacking rhythm through high press defence.

After working out Glenwood’s defensive pattern , Westville started to dominate the game and stringed together some good intricate passes on attack as the game eveolved. Westville used the ball well and in the 12th minute their dominance paid off as they took the lead through a set piece. Westville were granted a free kick and Cole Bailey whipped the ball to the far post where Westville’s left wing, Hlanga Vena was there to head the ball home into the top left corner. Westville continued to dominate the first half but their last penetrating pass and finish let them down. Against the run of play, Glenwood equalised in the 26th minute. The Glenwood striker fired a free kick towards Westville’s goal which was parried away by Westville’s keeper only for the rebound to be tapped into the bottom right corner. The teams went into the break 1-1.

Westville came out into the second half with ruthless intent and took the lead in the 42nd minute when Sihle Mhlamvu hammered home an awarded penalty for hand ball in the Glenwood box. Westville now had their tails up and went 3-1 ahead in the 46th minute through a long throw which Westville’s striker, Mbuso Ngobozi headed home into the top right corner. Westville totally killed the game in the 52nd minute when a free kick by Mpilo Shange was fumbled by the Glenwood keeper and then neatly tucked away by Westville’s Andrew Moon. It was a great second half performance by a spirited Westville team who continue their unbeaten domestic season run. They have now gone for 12 games unbeaten in KZN.

Westville play their last game of the season against a strong Maritzburg College team next weekend. It has all the ingredients to be an absolute cracker.
