Westville 1st X1 Cricket beat Kearsney

After a good start to the season and accounting for Maritzburg College and St Charles in their opening fixtures, Westville put together yet another great performance to beat visitors Kearsney this past weekend.
Westville won the toss on what seemed to be a wicket which would provide good purchase for bowlers early on. This ended up being a great call by the Captain, Dylan Beavan, as Westville found themselves surging through the Kearsney top order early on, getting wickets at regular intervals. Their main point of attack was provided by frontline seamer Joshua Brady, with figures of 2/35 after his 9 overs. Through some patient and carefully planned field placing, Westville were able to restrict Kearsney to a modest total of 148 all out. Best of the bowlers was in-form left arm spinner Reikert Viljoen who managed to bag his third 3 wicket haul in three weeks. His figures were 3/16 off 10 overs. Other noticeable contributions came from Matthew Pollard with 2/40 and Captain Dylan Beavan with 2/23 in his 10 overs.
Westville then went into bat needing a solid start from the top 3 batters in order to set up a good base of attack to overhaul Kearsney’s modest total. Westville achieved exactly that with an opening partnership of 85 from Chad Carney 37 and Michael Scott 40. Kearsney then got the breakthrough they needed with 2 wickets falling in quick succession bringing the run chase to a slight halt.
With just 65 runs needed to win the game, all the pressure was on Kearsney to get wickets and get them regularly. Through some complacent batting by the home team, Kearsney were able put some pressure on the Westville batters with wickets falling regularly. Only Wasseem Rahman managed to get into the 20’s amongst the middle order batsmen. Kearsney spinner Robbie Koenig did most of the damage taking 6 wickets for only 32 runs in 10 overs.
Westville eventually pulled themselves together and got to the total of 149, loosing 8 wickets in the process with Reikert Viljoen hitting the winning runs.
Having now won 3 on the trot, Westville are hoping to continue their good form next weekend against Hilton College.
Westville dominates the Water polo
Westville had another good day in the pool over the weekend against Kearsney College with Westville winning 9 out of the 10 games.
The junior games were well contested with WBHS winning the U14B and games by one goal. Kearsney’s only victory came in the u14A game which they won 13-1. In the U15 age group the A team game was very tight with WBHS winning 6-5 and the U15B winning 8-1.
WBHS dominated the senior age groups with the closest game being the U16A which WBHS won 6-2.
In the 1st team game, Westville went up early and then stayed in front for the rest of the game. Westville led 2-0 after the 1st quarter. Kearsney started the 2nd quarter well, closing the gap to a goal. Westville finished the quarter off strongest and at half time led the game 4-2.
In the 3rd quarter each team scored a goal with lots of missed opportunities from both sides. The 4th quarter saw Westville dominating procedures and outscoring Kearsney by 3 goals to 0. Again, Westville missed a number of scoring chances after creating good opportunities, showing that they still have some work to do on their goal shooting skills.
The game finished 8-3 in Westville’s favour.
