Westville Boy’s High School welcomed Michaelhouse on Bowdens Field for their Old Boy’s day. The Westville Old Boy’s had come out in their numbers and the 1st rugby team did not disappoint them.

Westville played attractive rugby from the onset. The home team received a penalty soon after kick off  which full back Jared Lombard kicked over to give them a 3 – 0 lead. Westville created numerous try scoring opportunities, but forward passes and dropped balls let them down. Westville eventually managed to cross the try line with some excellent inter – passing and support play, but the final pass was deemed forward by the referee and the try was disallowed.

Undeterred the home team continued to probe the Michaelhouse defensive lines and eventually crossed the tryline to score their first try. Brogan Boulle,  Westville’s outside centre,  broke through the Michaelhouse defensive line and ran nearly 50 meters to dot down in the right corner of the field. The conversion was missed by Jared Lombard. Westville went into the break with the score at 8 – 0.

The second half started with Michaelhouse putting many phases together, with pick and goes, but they could not breach the strong Westville defensive line.  When this tactic failed, Michaelhouse attempted to breach the Westville defensive by playing the ball wide but again, to no avail as the home side’s defence remained resolute. The visitors then tried to use their lineouts in Westville’s 22 metre zone to score,  but the Westville defence stood firm. Eventually the visitors pressure paid off and they managed to get a penalty, which they kicked over to get within 5 points of the hosts (8 – 3).

This galvanised Westville into action and they started playing in the right areas of the field.  Fullback Jared Lombard  kicked  deep into the Michaelhouse half, on the right side of the field,   allowing right wing Hanro Naude to chase the ball down and dive over for Westville’s second try. The conversion was missed by Lombard. Michaelhouse then tried to put phases to together, but they were still unable to breach the Westville defence.

With a few minutes left of play,  Westville scored their 3rd try with some excellent inter – play between backs and forwards,  allowing prop Gustav du Randt to break a tackle and go over the try line.  Lombard converted to take the scores to 20 – 3 which was how the scores remained until the final whistle.
