The end of a long yet fulfilling season has dawned upon the WBHS debating teams of 2018.
The journey began as early as February and ended last Tuesday 14 August, with the Durban Coastal Debating League senior final, graciously hosted by Clifton College. The final saw our 1st Debating team square up against Durban Girls’ High with a thought-provoking motion (that is only released an hour before the debate commences) of “This house, as developing nations, support benevolent dictatorships. “ The 1st team had just come from a narrow win against the WBHS 2nd team in the semi-finals the week prior and were eager to prove their mettle in such a high-pressure debate.
But, as they say, all good things must come to an end and the Westville 1st team came runner-up in the league.

As a consolation, 5 Westville Debaters came in the top 10 in the league. In the Senior Division, Claudio Govender, James Haw, Trent Lilford and Harry Reginald Davidson enjoyed these prestigious rankings with Harry coming in 1st place based on overall speaker scores. He also participated in the World Schools Debating in Prague in the July holidays, where he received his Protea colours for representing South Africa.
Muhammad Jhaveri, Grade 9, was also placed in the top 10 in the Junior Division.
Westville Boys’ High has always prided itself on its strong debating culture, the focus being to engender critical reasoning skills and open minds within the future leaders of South Africa.
