Westville Boys High kicked their softball season in good form in both the U16 and U19 age groups.
Our 1st team played Hillcrest for the first game of the season winning 11-9. We followed this up by beating Northwood 11-1 and Thomas Moore 18-7. Due to Mother Nature and one forfeit we did not get a chance to play DHS, Glenwood and St Henrys. Matthew Jackson captained the side and certainly made an impact on the team’s performance. The boys played exceptionally well and showed their true colours as the season progressed. Our pitch and catch combination which consisted of Matthew Schnell and Luke Welman worked together to stop the big hitters from scoring those unwanted extra points. There were also some big hitters from our team with Matthew Larkin’s and Nicholas Finn raking in the home runs.
Our 2nd team played Kingsway for their first game of the season beating them 16-3, then beating Grosvenor 16-1, Glenwood 7-4 and Kingsway 17-2 with DHS forfeiting the last game
Both the 1st and 2nd teams were unbeaten, but had to cut the season short due to repeated bad weather.
The U16As were unbeaten the whole season, beating Holy Family 18-1, Glenwood 16-1, Hillcrest 18-2 and Grosvenor 11-0. Once again our pitch and catch combination showed the opposition just how it’s done, with Timothy Lee and Dale Freemantle doing a great job. There were also some great outfield catches taken by the boys that kept the crowd entertained.
The U16B had mixed results. Most of the boys were still learning how to play the game but a lot of fun was had and the boys showed great interest for the game. After losing to the A teams of Glenwood ,DHS and St Henry ’s they ended off the season beating Northwood 10-6.
Thank you to the other coaches Mr G. Bauer and Mr C. Commins and the players themselves .We look forward to another enjoyable and successful season softball season.
KZN trials were held just before the end of term three and I had the privilege of being one of the selectors over the two day process. There was a lot of talent from all the boys that were there, but the main schools that dominated the talent and team lists were Westville and Glenwood. Twenty five players were chosen for each age group. Westville produced four KZN representatives in the U19 age group and 7 in the U16 age group.
U19 KZN Reps
Nicholas Finn, Stephen Coombe, Matthew Schnell and Russell Haygarth.
U16 KZN Reps
Timothy Lee, Dayle Freemantle, Callum Yates, Ashton Keppie, Chad van Rensburg, Jamie Rohrs and Michael Ross.
Congratulations to these boys on their selection and good luck for the tournament taking place over the December Holidays.
