The sport of Basketball was recognised as a major sport in 2007.
A major factor in the development of the sport has been the construction of the School’s Multi Purpose Centre in 2005/6. Westville Boys’ High has arguably the best indoor centre in the country which allows for two full Basketball courts and four Cricket nets to be used simultaneously.
In 2008 Westville’s Basketball program acquired the expertise of Llew Dodd and George Ogolla. Lew Dodd was 1st team coach for Maritzburg College for over 25 years. George Ogolla studied and played basketball at College level in America, and he has coached both the Kenyan and South African Men’s basketball teams.
The Basketball program has been strengthened by the time-table Sports Academy periods during the week. The program allows the boys two hours of high performance coaching with George Ogolla which supplements their afternoon team trainings.
As a result of the coaching and support structures in place, Basketball has grown to cater for over 200 boys in 16 teams. Together with the social league offered here, WBHS offers arguably the largest Basketball program in the province. In a relatively short period, WBHS has grown into a Basketball force to be reckoned with and is now generally regarded as the second ranked team in the province.
In the past 5 years Westville has made a notable mark at both provincial and National levels. Raven Rudolph, Sfiso Dlomo, Lufefe Mlisana have been selected for KZN U17 team while William Allen, Rama Afullo, Zinzan Lotz, Dillon Ward, and Kyle Maclean have all been selected for U17 and U19 South African teams. Kyle matriculated in 2012 and earned a full scholarship to study and play college basketball in America.
