Westville Boys’ High School has a proud water polo tradition. The sport is primarily played in the third and fourth term, although there is nowadays also a short fixture list in the first term.
The approximately ten water polo teams produced each year benefit from training in the world-class Aquatics Centre. The Chad Le Clos Pool, which is a 30mx35m pool with a uniform depth of 2.2m, is perfectly suited for water polo. There is also the Chad Ho Pool, which is 25mx25m.
The A teams across the age groups are invited to play in a number of tournaments each year. For the 1st team, the most eagerly anticipated tournament each year is the SACS Water Polo Tournament, which attracts the Top 20 water polo playing schools in the country. WBHS has won this prestigious tournament twice, in 1989 and in 2007. The 1st team also plays in the highly competitive Clifton Water Polo Tournament each year.
WBHS has produced six international water polo players at the senior level. One of the school’s Old Boys, Brad Rowe, has been the Head Coach of the SA water polo teams on several occasions. Rowe recently joined the WBHS staff.
