The WBHS Swimming teams have started off 2010 on a high. The A team retained their National Boys’ Schools title and the Alan Burt Trophy, with an impressive display at the University of Pretoria pool last weekend winning the event 53 points clear of second placed Pretoria Boys’ High.
The Westville boys were unsure of the success they would achieve this season given the fact that they had a several nationally-rated swimmers had matriculated last year, and that four of the current squad members have been ruled out of competing through injuries.
Nevertheless, captain Chad le Clos and vice-captains Jayden Fourie and Joshua Dwyer led from the front and were able to motivate their charges across the age-groups in winning 23 of the 30 races at the national event.
The outstanding age-groups of the day were the the Under 14 and Under 15 age-groups who won all five of their events.
However, it was the all-round team effort that made the difference. Swimmers who produced outstanding individual performances on the day included Christopher Gillespie, Juandre Wiggill, and Adam Abraham (U14), Clayton Jimmie. Lee Geeson, Alan Neat and Dylan. Rosser (u15), Paul Van Acherbergh, Byron Doyle and Stefan Naicker (U16), Drew Rosser, Warwick Skerritt, Calvin Schaanick and Haydn Adamson (U17) and the open age group was dominated by Chad le Clos and Jayden Fourie.
The final points standings was:
1. Westville BHS – 288 points
2. Pretoria BHS – 235 points
