On the 25th April 2023 the 1st team golf squad left on our annual tour to Sun City. WBHS entered two teams of 5 boys into the competition that saw schools from all over South Africa, including Paarl Roos; Rondebosch and Glenwood and even schools from Zimbabwe.
Our boys played at the prestigious Gary Player Country club and Lost City course over the three days of competition. The A team made the cut after the first two rounds to compete for the A division championship while the B team missed out on the cut by one position, competing against the A teams of other schools, meaning they would compete for the B division championship.
On the final day we saw the boys compete against some of the premier schools in South Africa with the A team finishing 6th overall playing at Gary player Country Club. The team B, competing at Lost City, managed a fantastic final day of play. A special mention to James Naude and Oscar De Montille who had the two top scores of the day in the B division leading the B team to an amazing win.
A big congratulations go to all boys involved in this tour. Additionally, a big thanks to all our golf parents who helped with fundraising and sponsorships for the tour. Their help and support are a tremendous help to golf and WBHS as a whole. Also, a big thank you to Kingfisher fruits and Zenati Insulated Panels for their sponsorships of touring kit for our boys.
We would also like to thank Pieter Hoeksma, from Sun City, and Pam Hayward for organizing this prestigious festival.
#WinterSeasonSports Results – Week 12: 17-23 April
RUGBY REPORT – 22 APRIL 2023
In a nervy last couple minutes, Westville managed to hold on to their lead to beat Kearsney 34-29 in what was Westvilles’ first home game of the season.
Westville were stunned very early in the game when Kearsney scored an unconverted try to take a very early lead. The try came through a very strong maul from Kearsney. This would go on to be a theme of the game as Westville struggled to deal with the maul throughout the game.
Westville responded a few minutes later with an unconverted try of their own through Unathi Mlotshwa. They would follow this up with a penalty from Mlotshwa. Both teams would go on to huff and puff throughout the half but the scoreboard remained the same.
Westville couldn’t have asked for a better start to the half as crowd favorite Tshegofatso “Speedy” Ramaloko made an incredible counter attacking run to score under the poles a mere 30 seconds into the second half. This would go on to be Westvilles most dominant period of the game as they played some beautiful running rugby to go 29-12 up. Ryan Pistor raced away to score in the corner to extend the lead even further to 34-12.
Westville will be very disappointed with their last 12 or so minutes, as ill-discipline resulted in inside centre Likhona Finca getting a yellow card. Kearsney sensed that the momentum had shifted and piled on points to get to 34-29. The last few minutes became very nervy for Westville. Fortunately they were able to hold on and bag the win.
Overall it was a successful home coming for Westville. 18 games were played with Westville winning 10 of those. The u14A and 1st team groups now head to Gqeberha for the Grey rugby festival while the rest of the school have a bye this weekend.

In what was a battle of two very good teams, Westville lost narrowly 24-20. DHS pulled away in the second half before Westville fought back at the death to set up a nervy last play at the kickoff. Westville knocked on and the day belonged to the Horseflies.
The game began very well for Westville as they got an early penalty to go 3-0 up. DHS responded to make it 3 all. Both teams were defending well to nullify one another. Westville were next to add to the scoreboard as sustained pressure on the DHS team resulted in a knock on from one of the DHS backs. Westville centre’s Likhona Finca picked the ball up and dived over the line. The conversion was missed to take the score to 8-3. The first half would continue with Westville making a lot of the play but DHS keeping the Griffins at bay with very disciplined and organized defence. DHS would eventually get back on the board shortly before halftime after a strong maul by the big forwards set up their silky backs to score in the corner. The try was converted and DHS went into the half 10-8 up.
The second half started well for Westville as they pulled off a clever lineout play to send hooker Ross Calvert over for a try in the corner. Again Westville failed to convert the kick. Westville were now up 13-10. Westville will really rue some defensive lapses which cost them dearly in the second half. The first was missed tackles on DHS Tight head prop Simphiwe Ngobese who featured strongly throughout the game. He broke a few tackles and ran half the length of the field before releasing to one of his backs to dot down. The try was converted. Shortly after another lapse in concentration resulted in Westville allowing the ball to bounce off an up and under kick. It was gathered by the DHS winger who raced away to the tryline. Another try for DHS to send the score to 24-13.
Westville would hustle and bustle attempting to hurt and penetrate through the DHS defense but DHS stood firm until with a few minutes to play Westville broke from deep and after a few strong carries, Daniel Mayo the Westville lock went over the line. A quick drop kick was taken and converted. The ref signalled that the kickoff would be the last play of the day. Sadly Westville dealt very poorly with the kickoff by allowing the ball to bounce. It resulted in a knock on and that was that. The ref blew the whistle to end the day.
Westville accounted themselves very well but will rue a ten minute period where they made costly errors and gave rather soft points to DHS. In other games the u16A team will be very proud of their 26-24 win. The 15A fought valiantly but went down 10-15. The DHS u14A team are a strong and incredibly assembled group of boys and they defeated our u14A’s 40-10. All in all 19 games were played between the 2 schools. 7 were won by Westville and 12 by DHS.
Looking forward to next week, Westville will be excited to host Kearsney in what will be Westville’s first home game of the season. Finally we get to play in front of our home crowd.

It proved to be a great day for Westville as they came out with victories throughout their A teams. Fixtures against Northwood always tough and tightly contested and to therefore achieve this was no small feat.
In what was a beautiful sunny day in Durban North, there were many tough and grueling games played. It is tough to mention just one game as there were many great performances and results, but it was rather pleasing for the 1sts to get their 1st win of the season with a 22-23 result.
The wind proved to be a massive contributor to the days events. Opting to play against it in the first half, Westville knew it would need to dig deep and try stay within touching distance so that they could really capitalize in the second half. It didn’t quite go to plan initially. Northwood had a strong start, racing away to a 10-0 lead. Westville stayed calm tgough and clawed back to go into the halftime break with the score at 10-8.
The second half would consist of many errors from both teams. Westville managers to come up with some great tries though. With 5 minutes to go Avethandwa Tukwayo scored to send Westville ahead 23-15. Northwood were not done though. Naively Westville played too much Rrugby in their half in the last 5 minutes. Northwood turned the ball over and scored a converted try to go one point behind Westville. It would be a nervy last 2 minutes but Westville held on for a narrow win.
Westville showed moments throughout the game that they can be a really good side in 2023. They just need to cut down their high error count as this is still costing them dearly from really hitting their straps. They have a short break now before taking on Noord Kaap, Hartpury from the UK, and EG Jansen at the Kearsney Easter Rugby festival.
In the other age groups, the u14’s will head to Maritzburg College for the Annual Skonk Nicholson Rugby festival. The u15’s go to Paarl Boys for the Frans Malherbe festival, and the u16’s go to Jeppe Boys High for their u16 festival. The 2nd team will play in a festival at Glenwood. We wish all the teams well and hope to build good momentum and cohesion for the rest of the season.
