Playing against some of the top cricketing schools in South Africa, Westville’s young side more than held their own at the Grey High School Festival in Port Elizabeth in early January, returning undefeated.
The team played 4 fixtures, with 3 convincing victories. The one draw was against Grey College (Bloemfontein) where rain stopped play.
Westville then when on to beat Affies (Pretoria) in the next game. Affies were ranked as the top cricket school in South Africa before the match. This was certainly the highlight for the Westville team.
Victories against other top schools; Pearson High (Eastern Cape), Selborne College (Eastern Cape), and King Edward (Johannesburg) augers well for the 2017 season for the Highways team.
Noteworthy performances over the 4 days were Carl Jairaj with a 10 wicket haul in 22 overs, and Matthew Pollard’s 160 runs at an impressive average of 53.3.
