A medal is in sight at the Rio Olympic Games for the foursome, including Cameron van der Burgh, Christopher Reid and two Westville Old Boys, Chad le Clos and Calvyn Justus. This emerged at the recent SA Swimming Championships held in Durban.
The target of 3:34 was set to qualify for the 4 x 100m medley relay and the four swimmers narrowly made it with Calvyn Justus swimming the freestyle leg and stopping the clock at 3:33:40.
Reid got the team off to a good start with the backstroke in a time of 53:12 followed by van der Burgh who completed the 100m breakstroke in 58:95. Chad le Clos then posted a time of 51:59 for the butterfly, leaving Calvyn Justus the huge task of a sub 50. He held his nerve with a split of 49:74!
“It’s been my dream since I started the sport, so I’m on cloud nine right now,” said Justus.
