Westville teams dominate at King Edward School

Westville Boys’ High travelled up to KES over the weekend with 23 rugby teams, 13 Hockey teams and their Squash team to take on the Johannesburg sporting powerhouse. After the dust had settled on Saturday afternoon, the KZN visitors had proved to friend and foe alike that they are now one of the Coastal province’s powerhouse sporting schools.

On the Rugby field they won 15 of the 23 games with one draw, and in the process beat the much vaunted KES 1^st XV. The 2^nd team, 3^rd team and the Under 15A and Under 14A teams also recorded victories. The Westville boys won 5 out of 7 Open games and 5 out of 6 Under 14 games.

It was much the same story on the Hockey Astro where the visitors dominated most games winning 11 of the 13 fixtures including the 1^st Team, Under 16A and Under 14A games. The Hockey boys went on to meet Affies, the might of Pretoria, and recorded three wins out of the four matches played, with one draw. The Westville 1^st team showed excellent form, beating KES 2-0 and Affies 4-2, while the Under 16A team boasted a 2-1 win over KES and followed this with an impressive 7-0 win over Affies.

The Westville Squash team achieved similar success beating KES 8-2 and adding the scalp of St John’s- (7-3) for good measure.

WESTVILLE FIRST RUGBY TURN THE TABLES ON KES

After one draw and two losses in the last three years against KES, the Westville lads had a point to prove this year against a team that is widely rated as the top schools Rugby team in Johannesburg. This was always going to be a tough ask as they were playing at Fortress King Edward.

Despite early losses to Paarl Gymnasium and Outeniqua, the Westville 1^st team have settled into a very decent unit and have recorded comfortable wins over Hilton, Framesby (Eastern Cape) and DHS, while they did well to subdue an imposing Pretoria Boys High team two weeks ago.

Encouraged by the wins by the other Westville teams earlier in the day, the 1^st XV went into this game determined to record a victory.

The first half belonged to KES with their fullback Fuller kicking two penalties. Playing with a breeze behind their backs, KES enjoyed territorial advantage by pinning the KZN team deep into their half and forcing them to kick out. With their lineout working perfectly, the home team launched multiple attacks but were met with a well organised and resolute defence. When Westville did venture into KES’s half, the continuity of their attack was let down by basic errors. Flyhalf Reece McHardy did cross the whitewash after a well work passage of play on the blindside but the ref ruled the final pass forward to deny the visitors any points and they went into the break 6 points down.

The second half started with Westville in further trouble when KES finally breached their defence to score a fine try through prop Ameer Williams. Although Fuller was unable to convert, the home team now enjoyed a handy 11 point lead.

Stung by the KES try, the visitors galvanised themselves into action and winger Keegan Paverd and centre Brad Ellse both came close to scoring. Ellse had actually broken clear but as he was about to score, bizarrely ran into the KES physio who was treating an injured player. The ref ruled an attacking scrum to Westville and from this set piece, McHardy exploited the short side to open Westville’s account. Moments later Ellse read the KES attack and intercepted to score a 50m try. Fullback Snyman converted to give Westville a slender one point lead going into the final quarter on the match.

Paverd got Westville’s try third from a well worked move off an attacking scrum deep in the KES 22m area, and with the visitors now in ascendancy, the home team’s lineout began to falter giving Westville territorial advantage. Snyman kicked a penalty to stretch the lead to 11 points but the KES team refused to lie down and fought back hard to score a try through lock De Laat on the final whistle to close the score to 22 – 16 to the visitors.
