The Westville U17 Sevens team got off to a good start at the Crawford La Lucia event this weekend, ending the 2-day event undefeated. However, due to the vagaries of the structure of the tournament and a 14-14 draw against Kearsney in the first pool game, the Westville boys ended up in the Plate event, which they duly won.
The game against Kearsney was a tight one with WBHS scoring first and Kearsney then drawing level. In the second half WBHS scored again with Kearsney levelling once again.
Consequently, next two pool games were to be the decider on which team would top the pool. After completing the pool games, the Westville boys were 47 points clear and Kearsney had to win their last pool game by more than 47 points. Kearsney ended the game against Redhill after the hooter went with a last gasp try to make it 48-0. This meant that Kearsney topped the pool with WBHS being moved to the Plate division.
After a comfortable 24-10 win over Northwood in the semi-final, WBHS confronted a very good Michaelhouse team. They were soon in trouble with Michaelhouse scoring two quick tries which they converted for a 14-0 lead. Thereafter the Westville boys gathered momentum and scored 32 unanswered points for an unassailable 32-14 lead. Michaehouse scored a consolation try at the end for a 32-19 win.
