Five old boys, four different sports, three countries represented. WBHS at the Tokyo Olympics.

It’s been a long time coming, but the ultimate sporting dream is a day away from becoming a reality for five Westville Old Boys with the start of the *2020 Olympic Games tomorrow.

Their sporting talent aside, they are a testament to Westville Boys’ High School and all five displayed leadership, humility and integrity during their school careers.

Mohamed Mea (2009) was the Head of Grade 9 in his year as a student leader, but also an incredibly versatile sportsman. He was awarded the Silver Jubilee Shield for Sportsman of the Year in matric, having represented WBHS in four sports at 1st Team Level, and two at KZN. He was also awarded an Incepto Ne Desistam award for sport honours and academics. He will represent SA at the Olympics for Hockey.

Chad le Clos (2010) has been an incredible ambassador for sport and swimming since his matric year at school, representing SA in that year at the Commonwealth Games. He captained the 1st Swimming Team and was awarded the Mickey Arthur Trophy for Sporting Excellence at Speech Night as well as an honours award. This will be his third Olympic games, with one gold and three silver medals to his credit already.

Zane Weir (2013) will be remembered as an inspiring Head of School and captain of athletics. He was also a 1st XV Rugby team member and received the Incepto Ne Desistam award for service and sport at Speech Night. Zane will be representing Italy in Shotput. An early inspiration in sport for Zane was his Italian Grandfather, hence the move to Italy in 2020 to pursue his career in shotput. He has been justly rewarded for his dedication to athletics.

Peter Wetzlar (2015) was destined for the 2020 Olympics in matric. He represented Zimbabwe while still at School and was awarded honours for his exceptional ability in aquatics. He captained the 1st Swimming Team in his year, and will once again represent Zimbabwe for swimming, this time fulfilling a long-held dream.

Yaseen Margro (2018) was Deputy Head of School in his year, captained 1st Team Water Polo and made SA U19 in matric. He was awarded the Mickey Arthur Trophy for Sporting Excellence, honours for swimming, and as a true testament to his likeability and innate leadership skills, the Lester-Hall Cup for Good Fellowship. It as a natural progression for Yaseen to make the 2020 Olympics Team for Water Polo.

We could not be prouder, and we wish our five old boys a memorable and successful Olympic Games.

*The 2021 Olympic Games will be called the 2020 Olympic Games which stems from the postponement of the Games last March, from 2020 to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, organizers “agreed that the Games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.”
