Wing Dave Bartholomew opened the scoring for WBHS with a flick over the St Charles defender’s head and then hammering his volley into the top left corner of the net for the first goal of the game taking the team to a 1-0 lead.

Westville hosted St Charles on Saturday and the visiting team dominated the opening exchanges with quick intricate play.  Westville stepped up to the challenge and by the 16th minute, the home team’s left wing, Dave Bartholomew, opened the scoring with an absolute screamer with a flick over the St Charles defender’s head and then hammering his volley into the top left corner of the net for the first goal of the game taking the team to a 1-0 lead.

St Charles replied to this goal with a skillful run down the left flank by the St Charles midfielder who ran all the way to the edge of the Westville small box, to slip the ball into the net from a tight angle, leveling the score line to 1-1.

From this goal, St Charles surged into the ascendancy and started to dominate the game. They took the lead 2-1  after a beautifully whipped in set piece found the St Charles striker who volleyed home from close range.

Westville’s equaliser came from a corner which was flicked on by Ethan Knott and latched on in the far post by Bonga Makhanya.

The teams went into the break at 2-2.

Westville came out firing in the second half and finally seemed to find some rhythm. They started getting the ball wide and whipping in some dangerous crosses. Westville’s consistent pressure paid off in the 43rd minute when a lofted corner by Junior Zuma found Ethan Knott at the back post who did well to keep his header down and find the net from close range. 3-2.

With five minutes to go, Westville sealed the win after a pin point free kick by striker Jordan Schwartz found the bottom left corner of the net. 4-2.

A true testament to their fighting spirit and class – in the end Westville proved too good, and pulled through in a tense and hugely entertaining game of football.
