Westville Boys’ High School kicked off their rugby season with a convincing 52-7 win over DHS. On an absolute scorcher of a day, the Westville 1st XV brought much joy to their supporters by putting in a good first performance. All in all it was a good day on the pitch for WBHS who only lost two games to DHS.

The start didn’t go to script with DHS scoring a converted try very early on in the game. The Griffins didn’t panic though and four minutes later it was the home side that scored through a wonderful try by winger Bayanda Ngubane. Tiaan Kriek had a terrific day with the boot and slotted his first of the many conversions for the day.

Six minutes later, Westville scored again, this time through Gcino Mbatha. Another two tries would be scored before half-time, Bayanda Ngubane touched down for his second and the third from Stefan van der Watt.  Westville went into the half time leading 28-7.

The second half had more of the same. Westville continued to attack relentlessly and kept DHS scoreless. Second -half tries were scored by Matt Caldecott, Bryce Calvert, Mambo Mkhize and Gcino Mdletshe.

All in all, the boys put in a great shift and scored some very exciting tries. The final score was 52-7. It was very pleasing for Westville to get their season off to such an emphatic start and this bodes well for a successful and very entertaining 2020 season.
