The academic achievements of WBHS Matric pupils over the School’s 57-year history are legendary, but the media focus on academic standards since the inception of the ‘new’ National Senior Certificate examination in 2008 has certainly placed a great deal of pressure on schools to maintain and enhance their Matric results.
The 2011 Matric class of 208 boys continued to enhance the School’s academic reputation and met the high expectations placed upon them. For reasons unknown, the KZN Department of Education decided not to issue a Top 10 this year, but special accolades go to Jared Thom and Nicholas Roberts who achieved 8 distinctions and were placed in the top 5 of the region, and to Scott Roberts who also matched their 8 distinctions.
The quality of our 2011 results was very impressive. Some notable statistics were:
ü 100% pass rate
ü 189 boys (i.e. 91% of the group) achieved Bachelor passes
ü 15 boys achieved a full set of 7 or 8 distinctions
ü 27 boys achieved 6 distinctions or more (i.e. 13% of the group)
ü 43 boys achieved A aggregates (i.e. 21% of the group)
ü 103 boys achieved B aggregates of better (i.e. 50% of the group)
ü 160 boys achieved C aggregates of better (i.e. 77% of the group)
ü 439 subject distinctions were achieved in total
ü 88% of the group undertake Maths (rather than Maths Literacy) while 73% undertake Physical Science, a notable achievement given the national tendency for pupils to choose softer options.
The boys who each achieved 8 distinctions were: Jared Thom, Nic Roberts and Scott Roberts. Those who achieved a full set of 7 distinctions were: Teunis Bremer, William Bruce, Andrew Clark, Sumith Jadhunandan, James Moody, Syed Nadvi, Daniel Parsons, Daniel Reid, Shikar Singh, Faheem Solwar, Hassan Ali Tariq and Andrew van Rooyen. Those who achieved 6 distinctions were: Ryan Atkin, Christiaan Bleeker, Calvin Griffiths, Richard Hohls, Christopher Inman-Bamber, Priyal Jeena, Semeshan Naidoo, Donovan Nel, Dayne Pattison, Sashlin Reddy, Kaashif Sayed and Peter Woodroffe.
