The Remedial Unit at WBHS is run by Mrs Jenny Krouwel, who has an Honours degree in Special Needs Education. She runs an afternoon programme from Monday to Thursday, for boys experiencing difficulty with Maths (Grades 8 and 9), and English (all Grades). Boys do not need to register for these classes and can attend whenever they are able. She is assisted by Mrs Jenna Hoyer, who is also a remedial teacher, as well as many very able mentors from Grades 10 and 11. There is no charge for this programme.

In addition to the afternoon programme, Mrs Krouwel also works with boys on a one-to-one basis during the school day, where boys are taken out of art, drama, music or life-orientation lessons. These boys are selected from names put forward by their Maths/English teachers.

Many boys have benefitted greatly from this remedial intervention, many improving by as much as 10% in Maths and/or English, as well as gaining in self-confidence. It is important to mention that this programme is NOT only for boys who are failing, but for all boys who wish to improve their results in these subjects, as well as for boys who are not mother-tongue English speakers.
