The opening game of the 2013 KZN football season took place on Saturday 20 July at Westville Boys High School against Northwood.
The game was a scrappy one with both sides seeking to create opportunities from open play. Both sides tried to maximize their set plays in order to create further opportunities. Westville had the better of the exchanges in the first half and came close to scoring on three occasions. Despite this the game remained 0-0 at half time.
The second half brought tactical changes from Westville with Simiso Buthelezi coming on up front for Lwando Suanders. As a result of the change, Westville were able to launch more attacks from set plays in dangerous areas. Westville finally took advantage of one of those when Kingsley Jollands rose high to head the ball into the goal mouth from a corner kick which had been perfectly taken by Ibraaheem Vahed. Shane Ball was then able to head the ball into the back of the net.
A Northwood player was sent off which created further chances for Westville but no further goals were scored. Westville held onto their one goal lead.
