The Westville 1st Hockey Team extended their winning run this past Friday with a 6-1 victory over St Stithians College from JHB which keeps them at the top of the S A rankings for another week. This was the 2nd time for this  year that both teams have locked horns. Westville won the first encounter at the St Stithians Easter Hockey Festival in JHB earlier in the year.

Last  Saturday, the first half saw Westville miss a few chances but dominate possession and territory. The teams went into the break with the score at 0-0.

The second half started at a blistering pace with Westville launching attacks down the right flank. James Cumming eventually broke the deadlock with a flat strike into the bottom left corner of the goal giving Westville a 1-0 lead 3 minutes into the second half. The second Westville goal came soon after with a back post tap in from Alastair Tyrell after a defensive scramble in the circle. St Stithians then turned over possession deep in their half and launched a quick counter attack which resulted in them winning a penalty corner. The corner was converted with a slider to the back post that was deflected into the goal. The score was now 2-1 with St Stithians on the attack.

This galvanised Westville into action who lifted their the game to the next level and scored 4 more goals  from Bruce Kerr, Jason Ward(Penalty Corner), Kyle White and Captain Jacques Bleeker(Penalty Stroke). It was a fitting end to the game with Jacques Bleeker scoring a penalty stoke in his 50th match for the first team.
