Westville Boys’ High continued their total dominance of KZN swimming by being crowned the KZN champions for the 6th year in a row at the Alex Baths in Pietermaritzburg last Wednesday. They won 23 of the 26 events on the evening. These results have only ever been bettered by their team of 2012 which won all 26 races!

South Africa’s swimming giants dominated proceedings from the first race. The programme started with the 50 metre  Freestyle Events. The surprise of the evening was Westville’s victory in the under 14 event which up to this point this season had always been won by Glenwood.  The other Freestyle races were also won by the champions.

As expected the Westville’s under 14 Breastroke team was beaten by their Glenwood rivals but the rest of the Breastroke races were again monopolised  by the Highways swimmers.

The Westville contingent then proceeded to win all the Backstroke and Butterfly races as well.

After 20 events Westville had only lost one race but on the final stretch, in the last 5 medley races, they lost the under 14 Medley to Glenwood in a very close race and the Under 16 Medley to Clifton.

All in all,  it was another most exciting and entertaining gala for the spectators . Although Westville are still stamping their authority in the pool, the other schools are certainly catching up. The Maritzberg College under 17 and under 19 age groups chased Westville home in many of the events with Clifton and Hilton also putting Westville under pressure in those age groups. Clifton also showed their teeth at under 16 level where most races were won by the narrowest of margins by Westville.

Glenwood’s under 14 swimmers, although eclipsed by their highways counterparts on the evening, will be hoping to reassert their dominance this Wednesday night at King’s Park in the Durban and Districts A League Championship Gala.

Westville of course will be hoping to retain their title as D+D champions and extend their unbeaten run for the sixth consecutive year.
