Westville Boys’ High School is proud of its “Biology boffins” who are part of the group of four Durban Grade 12 pupils chosen to represent South Africa in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Switzerland in June.

Michael Baxter and Pravir Mabeer, together with Roshalan Govender of Raisethorpe Secondary and Minoka Maharaj of Danville Park Girls’ High, will be among pupils from more than 60 countries taking part in the 24th IBO, a competition aimed at pupils whose interest in science and biology goes way beyond the school programme.

Robin Naidoo, SA team leader for the IBO believes that these four pupils who were picked from 3000, have the potential to go very far in the competition.   This will be South Africa’s second attempt  at winning and in order to prepare for the competition, these pupils will be studying a first – year medicine textbook.

Both Baxter and Mabeer are really excited to compete against the best in the world and believe that this experience will open many doors of opportunity.  “I have my hopes set on bringing back a medal from Switzerland,” says Mabeer.  We wish our Westville boys and their team every success!
