Westville’s Josh Korte who scored one of their 6 goals against DHS on Friday evening

The Westville 1st Hockey Team continued their good start to the season with an emphatic 6-0 win against local rivals DHS, to take their unbeaten run to 8 games. The game was played in some terrible conditions with the rain making the game more and more difficult.

The game started at a relatively slow tempo with both teams trying to find their feet. Westville created a few early chances, but the Westville strikers couldn’t provide the necessary finish. They then had a series of Penalty Corners with Ethan Matkovich not being able to beat the DHS backline,  with conditions playing their part. The game was dominated by Westville, but goals were hard to come by. The deadlock was finally broken by a well taken flick by Luke Allen. Josh Davies and Ethan Matkovich were in full control of the game and kept the tempo as high as it could be, despite the rain. The score was 2-0 with Allen doubling his tally. Westville went into the break 3-0 up after Mazwi Meyiwa broke free to hit a fierce backhand into the bottom corner of the goal.

The second half started with the same tempo, together with the weather making life difficult for the players on the pitch. Westville created circle entries and many turnovers, but they failed to increase the score line. After numerous missed chances, youngster, Buhlali Mhlanzi latched onto a fantastic ball from Joshua Davies to score a great deflection on his competitive debut. With a few minutes left, the game looked to end 4-0,  but the home team piled on the pressure and scored two more goals through Josh Korte, after an error from the DHS stopper, and on the hooter with Keagan Maccallum scoring a great deflection from a Penalty Corner.

The U14A team had a tough 1-0 loss after being dominant for most of the game. It was an exciting game with both teams creating chances and it was played in a great manner.

The U16A team had a good 2-0 win with the weather playing its part as well. The goals came from top goal scorer, Buhlali Mhlanzi and another scrappy goal from Kade Burns.
