Westville Boys High School hosted Kearsney College in a summer sports fixture on Saturday 8 November. It was great for the boys to get out on to the sports field with the pressures of exams behind them.
Having defeated Glenwood and Michaelhouse in previous weeks, the Westville 1st Basketball Team were prepared to cause an upset against Kearsney in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Westville were defeated convincingly by Kearsney in the 1st Term of 2014 (37 – 58). Kearsney are unofficially Ranked #2 in South Africa, just behind Maritzburg College. The Westville team lead throughout the game and managed to pull of a 40-33 win. Westville basketball has grown from strength to strength recently evidenced by winning 11 out of 13 matches against Kearsney who pride themselvesĀ as one of the top KZN Basketball school. This is testament to the hard work put in by MIC Jonathan Basson and Head coach Byron Tucker.
The Water Polo teams proved too strong for the Kearsney on the day winning 4 out of the 5 matches played. The 1st team managed to pull off a 5-4 win in a closely contested game. In other results the 14as won 12-1 and the 15as won 13-5.
The cricket fixtures were in the balance with all the rain we had in Durban last week. The Westville groundstaff have done a fantastic job in getting our fields ready for a big cricket weekend. This did however mean the stakes were raised at the toss. The 1st XI did well to restrict Kearsney to 166 all out but fell 10 runs short in the end with the bat on a difficult batting wicket. The 14as managed a win by 20 runs vs an unbeaten Kearsney side. This will give them the motivation to finish the season on a high with one game to go.
All in all it was an excellent local derby day of sport. Well done to all coaches and players. Westville look forward to the last summer sports fixture of the year next weekend where they will host Northwood School.
