Man of the match for the 1st team encounter against Northwood, Gareth Lillywhite

On Saturday Westville was hosted by Northwood in the major summer sports: Cricket, Basketball and Water polo.  Unfortunately a heavy downpour early on Saturday morning put paid to the basketball and the cricket matches played down at Northwood.  Despite the inclement weather, Westville managed to complete 20 cricket matches and all the water polo games.  The overall results remained impressive with very competitive performances from all teams and the win/loss stats in all codes indicating their dominance on the day against their Durban North rivals.

In Cricket news, Westville won 12 of the 14 games played against Northwood. Unfortunately the wet weather affected six games including the 1st X1, U15A and 14A which were all rained out.  In the open age group, Westville recorded a clean sweep from 2nds to 5ths.  The 2nd team won by 3 wickets with good contributions from Tristan Vermaak (4/21) and Dale Freemantle (47). The 3rd team were very competitive in their match against Kloof 1st X1, restricting them to 140/8 in their allotted overs and then were in a good position at 54/2 when rain stopped play and the match was drawn.

In Water polo news, Westville recorded a clean sweep, winning all seven of the matches played with a goal difference of 44.  Despite coaches Brad Rowe and Andrew Stewart’s  concerns that the 1st team would not fare well against a strong Northwood side that has recently beaten Clifton, their young charges rose to the occasion to outplay there more fancied opponents and win convincingly 6 – 3, a superb “team” effort.  Gareth Lillywhite produced a man of the match performance as “hole man”, scoring 3 spectacular goals.  He was ably supported by the lefty, Grant Hewitt with two goals from extra man set plays.

In Golf news, Westville continued their good results against Kearsney; by winning the  1st and 2nd team matches on the Cotswold Downs Course, 5½ – 2½ and 6½ – 1½ respectively.  The 3rd team beat DHS 2nds 8 – 0.
