hockeyOn Saturday 15 June, Westville’s hockey teams travelled up to Maritzburg College to play their last games of the season. This has been Westville’s most successful season on the hockey fields and they were determined to show how much they’ve closed the gap to College, whom over the years has been KZN’s leading hockey school.

The morning started with the U14A playing to a 1 – 1 draw and ending the season unbeaten. It was the 2nd undefeated year for U14A coach Andrew McIntosh. It was then the U16A to show their strength and only a last minute goal from College pulled them a 1 – 1 draw. The 1st were determined to show the same character as the earlier teams and became the first Westville BHS 1st Team not to lose to College. This was always going to be a tough ask away from home on College’s Papes Astro.

The game was played at a high intensity with both teams not giving the other time to settle. Westville’s captain Nick Finn scored from a rebound short corner to give the visitors the lead. This added to Nicks many goals for the season as the 1st Teams top goal scorer. College scored a field goal to go into the break 1 – 1. The 2nd half saw a battle in the midfield, with both defenses holding strong. The final result a 1 – 1 draw was a fair reflection of a hard fought school derby. This was Westville’s only draw for the season, along with the schools 1st team record of 14 wins for 2013.
